After 13 years on death row, murderer Lisa Montgomery, who cut a baby from her victim’s womb, has been given a date for her execution.

Montgomery, 51, has been in jail since December 2004 for brutally killing and cutting a baby from Bobbie Jo Stinnett’s womb.Montgomery has spent years on death row as her lawyers argued the abuse she suffered as a child and her severe mental illness means her sentence should be commuted to life in prison.

“Lisa Montgomery has long accepted full responsibility for her crime, and she will never leave prison,” Ms Henry said in a statement to“But her severe mental illness and the devastating impacts of her childhood trauma make executing her a profound injustice.”Bobbi Jo Stinnett was murdered in 2004. Montgomery had tried to pass off Ms Stinnett’s baby as her own, telling her husband she had gone into labour and had given birth at a nearby medical centre. But an appeals court held the violation did not in itself amount to “irreparable harm” and allowed federal executions to proceed. If Montgomery is executed on December 8, she will be the first woman put to death in almost 70 years. The last woman to be executed by the US government was Bonnie Heady, who was put to death in a gas chamber in Missouri in 1953, according to the Death Penalty Information Centre.
