Female athletes talk trash. That's not only fine, it's good for basketball. A stellar game somehow morphed into The Discourse™, ChantelJennings writes.
Because a) She needs Twitter’s defense about as much as she needs Iowa’s defense . And b) She knows the game. She knows that if you put your ego out there, it makes it personal. That can make the wins that much better, but it makes the losses tougher to stomach. It’s the price you pay when you’re an athlete who can back up your talk with your play — which Clark and Reese both can, as well as so many others in the women’s game.
Clark’s ego on the floor makes her great. She would still be a fascinating athlete to watch if she were just the long-range shooter, but she has an edge, too, and that’s what makes her games unmissable. Reese’s double-doubles are a thing of beauty, but the fact that she’s confident enough to put on a tiara during her arena introductions makes her must-see basketball. She points to her finger on the court knowing that she won the title this year, but everyone is coming for the Tigers next year.
Those who lionize White women but call Black women “classless” when their egos become a part of their game, or the fans who revel in the men who talk trash but gasp when a woman does it, too, are just telling on themselves. It’s pretty wild that in 2023, any of us are out here writing think pieces centered on the truly groundbreaking idea: Women talk trash. And that’sAnd since we’re here, then fine, let’s talk about the Reese-Clark feud. But let’s not stop there. While we’re at it, let’s talk about the fact that Clark broke Sheryl Swoopes’ NCAA Tournament scoring record, and that Reese won a national championship with a roster composed through the transfer portal.
