Clare Slattery and Netta Perrett arrived at Bowral Hospital in ambulances but were sent home with painkillers — the pair later found out they had rare, and potentially deadly, aneurysms that needed surgery.
An ABC investigation into Bowral Hospital can reveal two cases where patients suffering from undetected aneurysms were discharged with tablets for migraine pain.Ms Perrett said they were "incredibly lucky" not to end up with "some kind of brain damage"Both patients then struggled with severe pain, neck stiffness, and nausea before they attended Liverpool Hospital, in Sydney's south-west, for diagnostic tests and emergency treatment to stop the bleeds.
Both arrived at the regional facility by ambulance with "sudden onset headaches" and reported symptoms of nausea, vomiting, impaired vision and hearing to paramedics or hospital staff. The hospital's management does not believe there are systemic issues there. "They were making out it was just a headache, but I couldn't speak, I was only giving one-word answers and my eyes were closed and I was lying down," she said."I was sent home with Panadol and Nurofen," she said.Medical records show Ms Perrett was taken to Bowral Hospital in an ambulance on January 13, 2019 after collapsing at home.
However, she said "further training" on SAH treatment was one of several "changes" introduced since the two women were discharged. Ngaire Watson is a barrister with expertise in medical negligence who often helps hospital patients with serious complaints.
