Penny Wong's response to the International Criminal Court's move differed to that of the United States, with Washington highly critical of the decision to issue arrest warrants for Israel's prime minister and a military official. A Hamas leader was also named.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong has responded after the International Criminal Court issues arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former defence chief Yoav Gallant, and Hamas leader Ibrahim al-Masri. The move comes after ICC prosecutor Karim Khan announced in May that he was seeking arrest warrants for alleged crimes connected to the October 7 attacks on Israel by Hamas last year and the Israeli military response in the Gaza Strip.
The ICC said there are reasonable grounds to believe Netanyahu and Gallant bear criminal responsibility for using starvation as a method of warfare and crimes against humanity. These include "murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts" against Palestinians after Israel launched its attack on the enclave following Hamas' October 7 onslaught on southern Israel.
