Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong has welcomed the ceasefire deal reached between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon and expressed her hopes a ceasefire in Gaza would eventuate from the pivotal development.

Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong has welcomed the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon and expressed hope it would usher in an end to the war in Gaza in accordance with UN resolutions. In a pre-recorded address from Tel Aviv, Netanyahu said the ceasefire will afford the IDF a vital opportunity to focus on its fundamental military priority of defeating terror group Hamas .

“We hope that this is a catalyst for a broader ceasefire in the region. We look forward to the day when there is a ceasefire, too, in Gaza,” she said in Canberra. “But today, we are very pleased to see that there is a ceasefire with Hezbollah and that the people of Lebanon and Israel can know some peace.”

“This is a critical step for alleviating immense human suffering and ensuring displaced communities on both sides of the Israel-Lebanon border can return home.” “When the Prime Minister gave a pre-recorded video address to Israelis in Hebrew, he didn't tell that it was safe for Israelis to return home,” Mr Conricus told Sky News.

Following the news of the ceasefire, executive Council of Australian Jewry co-chief executive Alex Ryvchin said Israel had come to an agreement with Hezbollah from a position of “great strength".
