A group of 65 refugees with technology experience will get cadetships at the companies under a new program to help tackle IT skill shortages.

Two of the first group of Iraqi and Syrian refugees to undertake the 12-week training program have been working in Woolworths stores.“When they heard about this program they were so thrilled they’d have the opportunity to highlight the fact they are qualified,” Ms Hunter said. Last year he enrolled in a bachelor of ICT at Western Sydney University, but despite the demand for technology talent has been unable to find a role.“Even when I was studying at TAFE and uni, I was applying for jobs. But without experience, it’s very hard to find a job in IT. I’m just looking forward to starting a job in the real world,” Mr Lubbad said.

“It takes these new approaches in order to empower people from a wide range of backgrounds with these in-demand skills.”
