Woolworths has been compelled to negotiate with the United Workers Union (UWU) due to a picket at a Melbourne distribution center, leading to urgent legal action and empty shelves in supermarkets.
Woolworths says a picket at a major distribution centre in Melbourne has forced it to negotiate with the striking workers’ union as though the company has a “gun to its head”.
“ places pressure on Woolworths to accede to the industrial demands being made by the UWU in the bargaining process,” he told the hearing. Woolworths said this week that the strike had stripped $50 million in sales from its business and flagged further impact to its turnover until the strike was resolved.Counsel for the union, Hugh Crossthwaite, peppered Woolworths workplace relations manager Scott Paterson with questions about the losses to the company and the attempts to bus in a fraction of staff to run the Dandenong centre during the week.
