The giant retailer’s social licence credentials and corporate governance disciplines were tested and came up wanting. | OPINION Woolworths DanMurphy's NT
Woolworths has just had its ‘Juukan Gorge’ moment. The moment when its social licence credentials and corporate governance disciplines have been tested and come up wanting.
Yet having pushed the project for four years, during which there were repeated warnings of health and social threat to the indigenous community, the retailer has exposed its own deficiencies in balancing profit and proper corporate citizenship. Without that elevation of concern about corporate Australia’s treatment of traditional owners, Woolworths may not have felt the same level of scrutiny.
The report was publicly released ahead of a shareholder meeting next week to approve the demerger of its Endeavour liquor business.
