Anthony Albanese wants an expansion of childcare support to sit alongside Labor reforms including Medicare and compulsory superannuation

Labor insists its $5.4 billion plan to boost government-funded childcare subsidies will deliver a quick return, even though research suggestscould bring about only minimal change to workforce participation.

Mr Albanese argues every dollar spent on childcare adds at least $2 to the economy because it boosts workforce participation. But an Australian Institute of Family Studies review of the $3.4 billion Jobs for Family package – the last major injection of taxpayer funds into childcare – foundratio of mothers with children under 10, beyond what would have occurred due to population growth and the strong jobs market.

Most evidence points to the cost of childcare being a major barrier to increasing the participation of women in the workforce full-time after the birth of children. About 1.26 million families would benefit from Labor’s policy. The Grattan Institute says it would reduce some economic barriers to getting parents back into the workforce.
