Updated guidelines call for more than 400,000 public servants to be in offices “across the whole working week”.
Already a subscriber?The NSW government has ordered the state’s public servants to return to the office, a move that has been lauded by the business community amidIn a government-wide directive distributed on Monday, the Premier’s Department said the NSW government’s working-from-home arrangements would end from Tuesday. Those arrangements were implemented in 2019.

That has led to a quieter Sydney CBD, where the office vacancy rate sits at 11.6 per cent – a level not experienced in almost 30 years, according to the latest Property Council of Australia’s office market report. Mr Draper said the updated guidelines were not a mandate, instead calling it “advice”, while conceding that there would be mixed views around public servants being forced to return to the office.
Katie Stevenson, executive director of the Property Council’s NSW arm, said the move was a “game changer” for injecting life into CBDs and local centres.“Our CBDs are the heartbeat of the economy, powering jobs, investment, and thousands of businesses that rely on bustling commercial centres. It’s great to see the NSW government stepping up and leading the way by getting public servants back to their desks.
