The reopened international border and increased overseas travel is helping bring back much-needed overseas labour

More than 58,200 working holidaymaker visa applications were lodged with the Department of Home Affairs in the first five months of 2022 – about 75 per cent the rate of applications before the pandemic.AFR

Amid growing frustration about serious visa application bottlenecks more staff have been added to teams responsible for processing of Australia’s migration and temporary visa program. The data showed more than 12,700 applications were received in May, the highest rate in the previous 12 months. said earlier this month Labor could ease migration caps to bring more foreign workers into Australia, part of efforts to address what he called “acute” labour shortages.Skills Minister Brendan O’Connor and Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil have flagged similar moves as the median short-term temporary skilled visa currently takes 83 days to finalise, up from 53 days in March.
