A workplace tribunal has put the brakes on the working from home revolution after knocking back a human resources adviser’s request to work “fully remotely” from interstate so she could relocate with her partner.

But her manager said 100 per cent flexible work arrangements were largely due to the risk of COVID-19 and that “it is reasonable to anticipate that the business will welcome us back” and it would move to find “the optimal blend of remote and in-person working”. Even coming into work one week a month could not account for matters “which in our world can be unpredictable and occur with very short notice”.The manager said by granting the request she would be unfairly increasing the workload of others in the team who would be forced to cover in-person duties at short notice, roles that often required greater emotional contribution.
