Former LAPD Deputy Chief Mark Kroeker was familiar with fighting crime, but to balance out the negative with a positive he founded the World Children’s Transplant Fund.
Mark Kroeker, former Deputy Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department before leaving in 1997 after 32 years to train peacekeeping forces in war-torn Bosnia for the United Nations. That’s where he met 12-year-old Amela Kovacevic in Sarajevo’s main hospital. His name is Mark Kroeker and he used to be a deputy chief at the Los Angeles Police Department before leaving in 1997, after 32 years, to accept a job with the United Nations training peacekeeping forces in war-torn Bosnia.
“I had the opportunity to do some good in the world, and I took it,” Kroeker said. When he looked at Amela that first day in Bosnia, he saw another little girl in her smile. “I had carried this image in my mind of someday standing in the back of a church watching her get married, or maybe even giving her away,” he said. “Instead, I was going to her funeral. It was a major emotional disaster, a monumental failure.”
Kroeker promised, and now here he was 10 years later — after helping save the lives of dozens of children in Argentina, Mexico, Nicaragua, the Philippines, Kazakhstan and Armenia — looking at Amela and seeing Veronica’s face. “All our dreams were fulfilled when she continued to thrive, and now she is married with two beautiful daughters of her own,” Kroeker said.
