2023 is on track to be the hottest year on record as an emerging El Niño adds to the impact of climate change on global temperaturescompared to the same period in previous years. July 2023 currently holds the record for the hottest ever month globally, while August 2023 is the second hottest.

Dr Matt Patterson, an atmospheric physics expert at the University of Oxford, said climate change “is absolutely the main driver” of the record-breaking temperatures, but described the emerging El Niño as a “secondary factor” that “can push up global temperatures by a few tenths of a degree or nearly half a degree in certain years”.

“It’s something we are still trying to grapple with to understand exactly why the temperatures are so high. Climate scientists are perhaps running out of superlatives. The word unprecedented no longer really cuts it,” he said.Countries closest to the Pacific are most affected by the El Niño-La Niña weather cycle. While some areas, such as Peru and Ecaudor, are typically hit with heavy rains and flooding, others, such as Indonesia are likely to be affected by drought.

Met Office spokesperson Grahame Madge said it was “too early to say” whether October will be the hottest on record in the UK.
