The World Cultural Festival in Valparaiso just keeps getting bigger and better each year. The 14th annual fest celebrated Sunday afternoon at Central Park Plaza was no exception.
“The year that we really started to get big was the year Expedia named us as the festival to go to in Indiana,” said Valparaiso International Center board member Minakshi Ghuman, whose organization puts on the event. Expedia’s 2017 Must See Event for Indiana designation has been bringing in the people — and well-behaved leashed dogs this year — in greater numbers ever since.Ghuman said the focus this year was providing lots of local song and dance.
“It was very relaxing,” Martin added of the piece entitled “River on a Spring Night.” The drizzle they cheerfully endured under big umbrellas could have been a spring rain. “We just came here to enjoy the entertainment,” Martin said. “Another Facebook find.” “One of the artists that we helped, their community actually bought a cow, and now they have fresh milk,” said Salvador Callebaut, who was working the booth. “It’s a day off, but I’m here telling them about people across the world. Ain’t a better feeling than that.”
Other booths included Children’s International Summer Village, which has been seeking to foster international peace since 1950; Compass International Family Center that welcomes immigrant and refugee families in Valparaiso; and Dining for Women, whose Northwest Indiana chapter has a potluck every month in support of women and girls around the world. The money they would have spent on a restaurant lunch funds their monthly grants.
