The United States "is going through terrible trauma at the moment" with the natural response for US President Donald Trump being "to look for scapegoats for what has happened," according to Melbourne University Professor Michael Wesley. US President Donald Trump has threatened to defund the World Health Organisation after the “China centric” body failed to support early travel bans that could have saved tens of thousands of lives.
Mr Trump called for an investigation into the body which has been widely condemned for praising China’s response to the coronavirus despite the fact the country covered up hundreds of cases in 2019. President Trump had said the possibility of putting "a very powerful hold" on WHO funding could take place. "I'm not saying I'm going to do it, but we're going to look at it ... we will look at ending funding," Mr Trump said.
