No. 1 Iga Swiatek defeats Ons Jabeur in straight sets to win the US Open women's championship
Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek defeated Tunisian star Ons Jabeur in straight sets in the US Open women’s singles final at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing, New York. This marks Swiatek’s third career grand slam title, and her first outside of the French Open, which she won in 2020 and 2022. Swiatek cements her place atop the world rankings with the 6-2, 7-6 win over Jabeur, who is ranked fifth in the world, but is expected to ascend to world No. 2 when the new rankings are unveiled.
Swiatek, the first Polish woman to appear in a US Open singles final, had said Saturday’s match would be “a great battle” against Jabeur, a player who was looking to make some history of her own. Jabeur thought so too. “Iga never loses finals,” she said. “So it’s going to be very tough.” ‘Going for everything’ Jabeur, meanwhile, became the first African woman to compete in a US Open final.
