A new $14 billion telescope, which has been more than 25-years in the making, has finally launched into space, giving NASA the potential to see the universe’s first ever galaxies.
The telescope was announced as the Next Generation Space Telescope by NASA in 1996 as a replacement of the current Hubble Space Telescope which was launched into orbit in 1990.The Next Generation Space Telescope was renamed the James Webb Space Telescope in September 2002 after former NASA administrator James Webb.
The Webb – expected to last five to ten years based on fuel consumption rates – weighs approximately 6,200 kilograms in total and is infrared. Engineers and technicians assemble the James Webb Space Telescope November 2, 2016 at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Hubble and Webb are expected to overlap in their missions until the Hubble reenters the atmosphere, predicted to be betweenThe Webb faced numerous delays in its production due to issues including cost overruns, construction problems, and the COVID-19 pandemic which affected the final phase of production.of US$1 billion to US$3.5 billionNASA estimates the full cost for the Webb telescope will be US$9.7 billion and a projected lifespan of five years.
