The 31-level hotel, to be built out of cross-laminated timber and green steel on Adelaide’s Victoria Square, will rise 100 metres.
Veteran developer Barrie Harrop’s Thrive Construct will build the world’s tallest timber hotel in the Adelaide city centre, and a second timber hotel in regional Whyalla, as part of a $300 million investment in tourism infrastructure in South Australia. The 31-level CBD hotel, rising 100 metres, will be built out of cross-laminated timber and green steel at 187 Victoria Square – on the corner of Franklin Street and across the road from the Adelaide GPO and the new BHP building.
Most of it will be prefabricated in a factory offsite, then delivered in modules and assembled onsite, a construction approach that is generally more efficient, faster, and results in less building waste. The same materials and prefabrication technologies will be used to construct a 164-room hotel and 49 apartments on the site of the Foreshore Motor Inn in Whyalla. The $138 million hotel is also due to open in 2024.
Mr Harrop, who has been a developer in Adelaide for more than 40 years, described the location for the Adelaide hotel in as “the best available CBD site in Australia”. “We’ve had discussions with six leading international hoteliers. They all visited it and agreed it’s the best one,” Mr Harrop toldMr Harrop said the list of operators had been whittled down to one preferred party, which will operate both hotels. He said he was unable to identify the party at this stage due to a confidentiality agreement.
