In a statement issued on Monday, the WTA said it was good to see Peng in recent videos but they don’t address their concern about her “well-being and ability to communicate without censorship or coercion'

The IOC’s call with Peng comes at a time when the organization faces intense pressure from human rights groups who are calling for a boycott of the upcoming 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing. The International Olympic Committee’s handling of the issue is likely to invite further scrutiny at a time when the global body faces intense criticism about its failure to address a swathe of human rights issues with the 2022 Winter Olympics host.

Despite the Olympic organizer’s unwillingness to confront China on the issue, women’s tennis authorities and several high profile players have come out and voiced their support for Peng, 35. Over the past week, WTA chief Steve Simon has been vocally critical of the Chinese government and has noted that his organization has not been able to establish independent contact with Peng for over a week.
