People are now cautioned from digging or participating in activities like building sandcastles at the beach in Waimanalo on Oahu.
Wirestock/Getty Images/iStockphotoSix World War II-era mortars and grenades were unearthed at a beach that isn’t open to the public but is often accessed by hikers, unhoused people and those going off-roading, according to HNN. Health officials say the objects are a threat to public safety. The 140-acre site at the southernmost point of Bellows Air Force Station was once used as a military warfare training camp.
Military officials have posted signs along the site’s perimeter warning civilians of the potential hazards in the area, and they considered fencing off the site but were met with resistance from the local community. “I’m a fisherman. It’s my fear I could be dragging the net one day with my keiki and I could come home without one leg because we could accidentally pick up and set off an unexploded ordnance,” Restoration Advisory Board co-Chair Kuike Kamakea-Ohelo told HNN.
People are now cautioned against digging or participating in activities like building sandcastles at the beach. A 25-pound bomb was found buried in the sand last summer at the Menehune campground, about a mile away from the site where the six munitions were discovered, HNN reported.
