XFL reboot aims to buck history of failure for football startups in San Antonio
“We’re in this for the long haul, from the ownership group down,” Brandon said, “and that gives me confidence that we’re going to build a really, really successful league.”
When San Antonio was announced as one of the XFL’s hosts last July, Mayor Ron Nirenberg acknowledged the city’s “somewhat checkered history with startup leagues” but said early signs indicated the XFL had “a good chance of succeeding where others haven’t.” Still, Nirenberg saw the XFL as one of the strategic steps that position San Antonio as an “NFL city in the making.”
Coach Hines Ward said he was unsure what to expect for attendance Sunday but said it “would be nice if we had that whole bottom section sold out,” filling the 36,582 capacity of the Alamodome’s lower bowl. Ward also worked with the AAF as a player relations executive, and when he talks to Johnson or Garcia about the XFL, what he notices most is passion — that they “want this league to be here for a while,” he said.
Defensive lineman Mike Scott, who played in the USFL last year, said the XFL provides a step up in hotel and amenities — “No more boxed lunches. No more spaghetti surprise meatballs. None of that.”
