China’s Xi leader says Western sanctions on Russia are treating the global economy as a ‘weapon’ and would come back to bite the countries imposing them.

China’s President Xi Jinping has slammed Western sanctions against Russia, which he says are “weaponising” the global economy as he addressed leaders of emerging nations he hopes will support his alternative to the US-led world order.Mr Xi reinforced his support for Russian president Vladimir PutinXi Jinping and Vladimir Putin declaring their “no limits” friendship ahead of the Beijing Winter Olympics in February.

“Blind faith in the so-called ‘position of strength’ and attempts to expand military alliances and seek one’s own security at the expense of others will only land oneself in a security dilemma,” Mr Xi told a virtual meeting of the BRICS Business Forum, a precursor to the main event on Thursday.China is hosting the virtual meeting of leaders from BRICS nations this week. They include Mr Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa and Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro.

While China has not explicitly said it supports the invasion, its refusal to join sanctions or condemn the military offensive has drawn widespread criticism from the international community, which fears Beijing will one day seek to take similar action with Taiwan.
