Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin say they have “serious concerns” about Australia’s AUKUS pact.

| Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin have warned Australia they have “serious concerns” about the AUKUS agreement after the two authoritarian leaders met in Moscow to cement their relationship and push back against the West’s support for Ukraine.

“The two sides expressed serious concern about the consequences and risks to regional strategic stability of the establishment of the “Trilateral Security Partnership” by the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia and related nuclear-powered submarine cooperation programs,” Mr Xi and Mr Putin said in a statement released after their meeting in Moscow late Tuesday .

“These developments will likely provide some headwinds of course but on the whole China’s leadership seems interested in repairing relations with Australia.”Japan is doubling defence spending and shifting away from its post-war pacifist stance on regional security issues due to concern about China’s aggression in the region, as well as neighbours North Korea and Russia.
