China’s President said he hoped they could carry out activities together to benefit China and the US, in his first meeting with a foreign entrepreneur in years.
| President Xi Jinping said China is willing to work with the world on technology innovation and global challenges including pandemic prevention during a meeting with “old friend” Bill Gates.
“You are the first American friend I’ve met in Beijing this year,” state broadcaster China Central Television reported Mr Xi as telling the“I’ve always said that the foundation of China-US ties lies among the people,” the Chinese leader added. “We always pin our hopes on American people and hope the two peoples can continue to be friendly.”
Mr Xi’s meeting with Mr Gates raises expectations he might meet US Secretary of State Antony Blinken who is set to arrive for a two-day visit to Beijing on Sunday. The rescheduled visit aims to reset bilateral ties after a Chinese spy balloon flying over the US derailed exchanges earlier this year.Melinda Gates Foundation and the Beijing city government agreed to donate $US50 million each to fight infectious diseases such as malaria.
In a Wednesday tweet announcing his arrival in Beijing, Mr Gates said he was “excited to visit with partners who have been working on global health and development challenges” with the Gates Foundation.
