Yankees starter Carlos Rodón turned his back on pitching coach Matt Blake during his disastrous start against the Royals on Friday night, apologizing to him the next morning.
Rodón called the tantrum “embarrassing” after the 12-5 loss, insisting that he planned to speak with Blake to apologize. It took until the following morning for the two to link up, but the starter and coach did sit down for what Blake called a “remorseful and apologetic” conversation.
“It’s something that hopefully he can grow from,” Boone said. “It’s one of those things that obviously, he’s had a very difficult year. It’s one of those things that circumstances dictate and sometimes you see a guy that’s in the middle of a great year that’s showing that kind of emotion and it’s a different story. What happened was not acceptable and something that we want to make sure we address properly but we do feel like we’re in a good spot and there’s no ill intentions there.
Heading into this winter, Blake wants Rodón to work on the consistency of his delivery, focusing on his lower half. Other than injuries and an inability to stay healthy — the main culprit for Rodón’s slow start and inconsistencies all summer — reestablishing his good fastball command is the key to recapturing his old form.
It’s unlikely, but there’s a chance that Rodón will have one more shot to finish this season on a better note. The left-hander told his manager that he’s available to pitch out of the bullpen in both games this weekend, a product of his 35-pitch outing on Friday night.
