Carlos Rodón threw six innings for the first time with the Yankees on Tuesday night, allowing one run, but his line doesn't tell the entire story.
This wasn’t as promising of an outing from Rodón as his surface-level stats suggest, though.
More concerning than anything else was Rodón’s four-seam fastball. The lefty didn’t get a single whiff on that pitch on Tuesday night, throwing it 39 times. Washington’s average exit velocity against Rodón’s heater was 94.8 mph. The Yankees were seemingly adding a strikeout pitcher with dominant stuff to their rotation when they signed Rodón last winter. Cut him a bit of slack this time around since he’s building back up after a hamstring injury, but this first impression is a glaring red flag for a pitcher that will be around for five more seasons.
