Everson Pereira and Oswald Peraza will receive regular playing time for the rest of the season, a chance to develop and show what they can do with next season in mind.
That’s why these next six weeks are extremely important for this franchise, a chance to give potential cornerstones unconditional playing time at the highest level, prioritizing their development over the wins and losses.
Pereira is making his MLB debut on Tuesday, starting in left field and hitting seventh. That’s where he’ll play primarily for the rest of the season, an outfielder that could factor into the Opening Day starting lineup next spring. Peraza will start at third base most of the time as this season comes to a close, mixing in some appearances at shortstop and second base when Volpe and Gleyber Torres get days off.
Despite the Yankees’ cavernous deficit in the postseason race, the skipper insisted that this is still a team that’s trying to win ballgames. On Tuesday, they’ll look to snap an eight-game losing streak, their longest since 1995. The Yankees are also flirting with their first losing season since 1992, sitting four games below .500 with 38 games to go.“That’s the goal. I want to do whatever I can to help the team win,” Pereira said through the Yankees’ interpreter.
“It’s a special opportunity for us,” said Pereira with a smile. “We’re dreamers and our dream is right in front of us to get to the big leagues, share the experience with those guys, understanding the games and the work that we’ve gone through in the minor leagues. So very happy and I’m sure it’s gonna be an enjoyable experience.”
