For some Asian women whose husbands are out of work during the COVID-19 pandemic, they have no option but to find low-paid jobs to feed their families.

Each day she folds plastic bags and packs them together in sacks. She is paid $10 for 10 sacks, which takes her about three days.The 47-year-old said the amount of money that she earns is far from enough to fulfill her family's needs, but "at least it helps". Her story is not unusual for many Indonesian women today, who must take on the traditional position of their husbands as the breadwinners for the family.

"Their wives then are going back to work, doing whatever they can do. We see many wives are now making cakes or selling food products online."Dr Sa'danoer said even before COVID-19, many women across Asia would work to supplement their husbands' income, especially when they worked in informal sectors like driving a motorbike taxi or in the construction industry.
