Yazidis living in Australia are petitioning to be recognised in the 2026 census to help ensure they are considered in future policy making and their unique culture is not lost.
Hassan Ali migrated to Toowoomba with his family from Duhok, Iraq about five months ago.Australia's rapidly growing Yazidi community is petitioning to have its religion and language included in the 2026 census .
Most of this growth was due to asylum seekers being resettled in Australia between 2017 and 2018, after fleeing persecution in Iraq and Syria. Mr Sheebo said his mission was to ensure Yazidism could sustain itself over generations by being enshrined in the census. "In Australia, preserving the Yazidi language, customs and culture and rituals is essential for the survival of this ancient community," Mr Ali said.in a move that attracted criticism.
For those who indicated they had a religion, the ABS said it was testing the use of a write-in box for all responses. Kate Venables says the Yazidis people's need to hold onto their culture is something to be respected."Great quality ABS data definitely ensures we get the right support in social services, but also in health, education and all other spaces Yazidi communities engage with," she said.
