Its constant flow, low temperatures and gravel beds once made it ideal habitat for fussy fish such as trout and grayling. Such was the abundance that fish from Costa Beck would be shipped to other angling rivers to stock them, Martin Smith, secretary of the Pickering Fishery Association, toldIn the last twenty years, however, that habitat has been severely degraded and by 2009, the river was classed as being in poor ecological status.
The second major cause, Fish Legal says, is the Pickering sewage works owned and run by Yorkshire Water.The plant discharged sewage more than 250 times in 2020 and more than 400 times the year before. It continues to pour sewage into the beck in periods of rain.
Other factors included modifications to the river course and a quarry operating near the source aquifer.
