Anthony Albanese went to the election promising “renewal not revolution” but six months in and 61 bills later, it’s starting to feel more like the latter.

Against such a bleak backdrop, the federal Coalition is nonetheless trying to finish the year on a positive note. In her address to the final joint party room meeting for the year, as Labor was celebrating the passage of one bill after another, Deputy Opposition Leader Sussan Ley’s message was essentially one of it could be a lot worse.Ley, who was elected in 2001, hearkened back to the end of calendar year 2007, the last time the Coalition went to Christmas after having just lost government.

Dutton, the MP said, was doing a good job with a united team against a Labor government facing challenges much greater than the global financial crisis it dealt with when last in power. But while the team is in better shape compared to 2007, the party is structurally a lot worse off and its brand is severely damaged.

Second, Albanese is vastly more experienced than Rudd or Gillard. He knows the pitfalls, he has a plan, the party is united behind him, and he has only grown stronger in his first six months. “We said we’d have 10 days paid domestic and family violence leave, and we have. We said we’d establish a robodebt royal commission, and we have. We said we’d embrace Respect@Work and put women at the centre of our budget, and we have.

“It puts at serious risk the recent strong gains in employment and the inroads that have been made into unemployment and underemployment.″⁣
