Formula 1: Lando Norris has admitted he didn't deserve to win the Hungarian Grand Prix but believes McLaren's decision to pit him first put he and Piastri in an awkward position.
‘You can’t be part of McLaren’: The red line Norris came close to crossing in first Piastri flashpointJuly 23rd, 2024 1:10 pm
But instead of revelling in the success — and instead of celebrating Oscar Piastri’s first win — Stella became embroiled in a conversation about team orders. It took him until the third-last lap to change Norris’s mind, handing the place back to Piastri and allowing him to claim his maiden grand prix victory.
“I would be extremely concerned if Lando had not demonstrated ‘I am a race driver’ here, because that’s the impulse you need to fight hard. He demonstrated the spirit of the race driver.”OBEY, OR YOU CAN’T BE PART OF MCLARENOn the one side he expressed unequivocal confidence that Norris would play the team game. McLaren gave him his Formula 1 debut and made him central to its plans to ascend to the top of the championship. Its loyalty is absolute.
Stella’s words appear to take on a subtly different meaning in this context. It’s not simply that Norris was expected to be obey team orders; he was expected to obey them“You’ve got to be selfish in this sport at times,” Norris said afterwards, describing his inner turmoil in the final stint. “You’ve got to think of yourself. That’s priority number one.“It was not easy, but I also understood the situation I was in and I was quite confident always by the last lap I would have done it.
But this year’s it’s arguably favourite to win the teams title, and Red Bull Racing’s uncertain development trajectory means Norris has a sniff — albeit it’s a long shot — at the drivers title too. Part of that is expecting the drivers to fully buy into the process. There’ll be a time for McLaren to let its drivers battle freely for the championship between themselves, but the team isn’t there yet.
“But what I’m expecting is the other driver is coming to me and saying, ‘If you need my help with the other driver because he’s in the championship competition, I’m available’.
