You can win for losing: Rockets coaching job has more upside than it did during last search

Despite the Rockets' posting the NBA's worst record over the last three seasons, general manager Rafael Stone hasn't had trouble scheduling sit-downs with prospective coaching candidates. The Rockets had been a playoff team for eight consecutive seasons, the longest streak in the NBA at the time. They had two players with recent MVP awards.

The interest in the job has been evident. Several coaches who are not looking for a first or last chance to be a head coach, including at least one with a recent championship ring, have met with Rockets general manager Rafael Stone and with Patrick Fertitta, son of franchise owner Tilman Fertitta, about the opening.

Though there had been speculation about Toronto coach Nick Nurse having interest in the Rockets job, he and Raptors management have been involved in customary postseason planning meetings, possibly indicating they could work things out for Nurse to return. The Rockets have young talent, a collection of draft picks and the most cap space in the NBA, bringing “flexibility” that has driven at least some of the conversations.
