📖 You Don’t Know What War Is is 12-year-old Yeva Skalietska’s story of fleeing her native Ukraine Told in the format of a personal diary, it brings the horror of war into sharper focus than a dispassionate news report ever could, writes _e_watkins
– something Channel 4 realised in March, when it first broadcast extracts from the book after meeting Skalietska en route in Uzhhorod.
Published in October, the account is punctuated by headlines from various newspapers, as well as extracts from Skalietska’s school WhatsApp group. Here, friends trade silly videos alongside vital intel: “Guys, I’m all good for now, half my street was hit, but they didn’t touch us.” As “Ukraine fatigue” sets in, Skalietska’s story – and its power to jolt readers back to the urgency of her country’s ongoing plight – is more imperative than ever. She might have escaped Ukraine, but her diary prompts us to imagine a world in which she didn’t.
Hearing that 6,595 people have died ought to be 6,595 times as sad as learning about the death of one person, but such staggering devastation can seem unfathomable – until you remind yourself that each number represents an individual: what did she like to do? What has the world lost in losing her? As we hear about the author’s treasured piano practice, or her pink toy cat Chupapelya , the book situates tragedy on a human scale rather than a remote global stage.
