The national electric vehicle summit in Canberra will focus attention on what the whole car industry agrees is the missing ingredient - a mandated national fuel efficiency standard.

A funny thing happened on the way to the National Electric Vehicle Summit in Canberra on Friday. The Electric Vehicle Council doesn’t intend pressing the Albanese government for further cash or tax subsidies to encourage greater take up of EVs. At least not right now.

His approach contrasts with various EV subsidies recently adopted by Australian states and many other national governments. The passage ofto help combat climate change, for example, includes tax credit of up to $US7500 for purchasers of electric passenger vehicles under $US55,000 or $US80,000 for trucks and utes.

By far the most important, he argues, is the need for much stricter fuel efficiency standards which govern the permitted amount of carbon emitted per kilometre. Energy minister Chris Bowen will tell the summit he agrees.
