A university lecturer who stabbed his wife to death during an argument over childcare arrangements will spend the next 17 years in jail after a judge found his murderous attack was savage and sustained.

Adam Brown sat unmoving and struggling to hold back tears at the Supreme Court in Victoria on Tuesday as the court heard that an argument over the pair’s young son turned fatal when the 41-year-old armed himself with a knife in the kitchen of the family’s Croydon North home.Justice John Champion said Brown committed reprehensible violence against his wife Chen Cheng, 35, while their two-year-old son lay nearby, on April 30, 2022.

After the birth of the pair’s son, Cheng’s mother came to Melbourne to help her daughter. The court was told she witnessed arguments between the pair where Cheng would largely remain silent. About 10pm, three neighbours gathered in the communal driveway before gaining entry through a garage door where they found Cheng injured in the backyard of the home. They attempted to perform CPR on the dying woman until police arrived.Extensive blood staining was later discovered in the kitchen, living area, rear deck and backyard. A bloodstained MasterChef-branded kitchen knife was discovered on the kitchen floor.

Brown, who was working as a senior lecturer in digital media at Deakin University at the time of the attack, sat largely unmoving during the hour-long hearing, looking only at the judge and later his father as he was taken away.
