Meet Leon and Peter Gianni — the modern day 'gold hunters' from Kalgoorlie who are reaping the rewards of the WA gold boom, as record high gold prices drive a resurgence in prospecting activity across the state.
"Even the smallest amounts of gold can sum up to a decent amount of money," Leon said.
Since Irish prospector Paddy Hannan famously kick-started the Kalgoorlie goldrush 127 years ago, prospectors have had to acquire a Miner's Right.The Department Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety has issued 3,779 so far this year, including 400 in the first two weeks of September.
In August, Leon inked his first major deal as a prospector with ASX-listed gold exploration company GTI Resources. They say these sorts of deals are the professional side of the game and metal detecting is simply for the fun of it.Reality television shows like the Discovery Channel's Aussie Gold Hunters, which is broadcast in 122 countries around the world, have helped put prospecting in the spotlight again but is it really as easy as they make it look?
