Joe Thomas proved his athleticism on the hardwood before the gridiron.
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Joe Thomas had always played multiple sports. He became best known for football, of course, but as a youth he was also passionate about basketball. And if there was one moment that defined his potential on the court, it came one day in his high school gym.
“A lot of people think Joe was athletic from day one,” said Eric Thomas, his father. “From my experience, that was not the case. He was big, but he wasn’t necessarily athletic until junior high.”“The reaction of some kids was horror,” Eric Thomas said. “Everyone could see I was ticked,” he said, “because we couldn’t go full court anymore that day and until it was fixed,” he said.
Adams remembers Thomas as humble and coachable. “He respected his coaches. He questioned, but he did it in a way that showed he wanted to learn. He wasn’t questioning like, ‘Why are we doing this type of thing?’ And because we had a rule, ‘Hey, there’s nothing wrong with asking a question.’ "The team had lost focus during practice, and Adams felt they weren’t taking their upcoming opponent seriously.
