'You light it, you own it': Victoria Police issue warning ahead of bushfire season as authorities try to prevent major blazes

Parts of the state will see extreme and even catastrophic fire danger warnings put in place across the early part of this week, lending a sense of urgency to the yearly plea for locals to take care. "A fire started through reckless behaviour can have the same outcomes as a deliberately lit fire including significant loss of life, serious injury, property damage and more," police said in a statement.

Some common behaviours police are calling on the public to avoid include disobeying fire bans, burning off, leaving campfires unattended, using tools such as angle grinders or welding equipment in the open, and using flares. "Victoria is one of the most fire-prone areas in the world and we have a long a tragic history with bushfires," he said.

"I urge everyone this fire season to be aware of their responsibilities and work with us to stop any further tragedies occurring."
