The magnitude-1.7 earthquake was measured on the Lehigh-Berks county line.

A seismograph shows readings from a strong earthquake in this file photo. The Sept. 2, 2023, earthquake in the Lehigh Valley was much, much smaller at a magnitude 1.7, probably not enough to be felt. An earthquake detected below the Lehigh Valley this month isn’t the kind that usually generates headlines. It barely even generated a wobble. The very small magnitude-1.7 earthquake happened around 7:30 p.m. Sept.

But the location is interesting. “There’s not a lot that gets reported where this one was,” said Anne Meltzer, a seismologist at Lehigh University. Earthquakes in the region are clustered around two seismic zones, a loose cloud of quake readings from the Lancaster and Reading areas to the west and the Milford and Frenchtown area along the Delaware River to the east. This one was out on its own, but likely at the edge of the Reading-Lancaster zone, Meltzer said.

It’s also nothing to worry about. While statistically there is a chance that any minor earthquake could be a foreshock to bigger or more frequent events, Thomas Pratt, a geophysicist with the , said the possibility is “extremely unlikely.” As in: It’s been recorded maybe twice in this part of the country, ever.
