VF sat down with You’s newest cast members—Charlotte Ritchie, Lukas Gage, Tilly Keeper, and Amy-Leigh Hickman—to talk all about the Netflix thriller’s London-set fourth season.
By contrast, Keeper’s aristocratic Phoebe is all about a good time. She is a tabloid staple who’s famous for doing nothing in particular. Despite all that, she’s actually a decent and open-minded human being—a steadfast cheerleader for her spoiled friends, especially her American boyfriend, Adam, a flailing entrepreneur. “She loves very deeply and she loves all her friends despite all their flaws,” Keeper adds.
“I’ve been trying to remind myself that [Adam] is masking everything he’s feeling,” says Gage, known for his roles on HBO hit shows like“I don’t know if this makes sense, but he’s not the surface-level stereotypical rich kid; it all comes from real, layered feelings of not being good enough for your family, not being seen, feeling like an outsider in this new world of culture clash.
Perhaps on some level, Gage can relate. The actor, who describes himself as an “O.G. fan” of the series, says he auditioned for every season of—including for the lead role of Joe. By his own telling, it was one of the worst auditions of his life. “I truly can remember it—being in the room and just eating shit,” Gage says. “I think I had a very different preconceived idea of what this show was and what this character was. Penn is so brilliant because he’s so vulnerable and sensitive, so that you somehow empathize with this character. I was just there playing, like, a mustache-twirling villain. I was completely tonally off.” He was similarly foiled in tryouts for season two’s Forty Quinn and season three’s Theo Engler .
“Yeah, fuck the third time—fourth time is the charm,” Gage agrees. “I remember I got the audition [for Adam], and I didn’t think I was going to get the part. Which I never should do; I should never play casting director. But I taped for it and I had also just worked withon another project, so maybe that was a little helpful… And I got it. And here I am in London, living the dream.”
