Running alongside the Archibald prize, the Young Archie competition invites artists from five to 18 years old to submit a portrait of someone who is special to them and plays a significant role in their life.

He is really nice and he teaches very well.’‘My painting captures my older brother Xavier on a Tuesday morning. Sometimes Xavier is up, sometimes he’s down; on this day he was in the middle.
‘My friend Huckel is shown here in her teenage years with her signature flaming hair morphing into a ribbon that binds her body. The raven above symbolises intelligence and knowledge – attributes that she is known for. The blue jay and sparrow represent her other qualities, which are often overlooked – love, loyalty, confidence and curiosity. These two birds frantically try to unravel her, allowing her to be truly seen.
‘I have painted my great-grandma Lorna, or, as she signs her birthday cards, Gma. I chose to paint her by candlelight to create a rich, warm glow that illuminates her face from underneath, her eyes, and her pearls. She was born in 1936 and worked as a seamstress from when she was my age. Later she worked as a dressmaker. She was also a piano teacher, and I’ve played for years. Like Gma, I love art.’‘I chose my mum to depict in my portrait. She is wearing glasses and she loves travelling.
