“I’m still able to do pretty much everything else that my peers can do; I just have to do it a little bit differently,” Novacheck says. Novacheck is also a social-media star, posting videos about music, Escobars, and “teenage things” to a TikTok audience of more than 105K followers. This week, she’s one of five disabled musicians featured on"From the Top," the NPR-distributed program with an estimated 350,000 listeners in more than 200 radio markets. Houston is not among them, sadly, but the podcast form is now available through Apple, Spotify, or Soundcloud.
In the episode, LeGrand also sat down with superstar violinist Itzhak Perlman, who will conduct the Houston Symphony in Mozart’s Requiem April 1 and 2. Perlman, who contracted polio as a child, discusses childhood violin lessons and his efforts to raise awareness of those with disabilities, for example by consulting with concert-hall architects about making certain areas friendlier to those in wheelchairs or who otherwise need assistance getting around.
