Young people's view of politics and political expression differs from older generations, and they're showing it by abandoning the two major parties.
Asking young voters in Western Sydney about the Labor Party's treatment of now-independent senator Fatima Payman elicits responses ranging from anger to despair.
Rida Khan said her parents have always voted Labor, but are reconsidering due to the party's stance on the war in Gaza.Senator Payman, who at 29 is the youngest member of the current parliament, agreed that there is a generational divide in the expression of politics."It's not that they are radical… They want to have these discussions upfront."
"Historically my family and extended family always voted Labor, and so have my friends and their families, especially in Mt Druitt," Rida said. But pushing for change comes at a huge personal cost, and frustration at what she perceives as a lack of movement on Palestinian rights and recognition of Palestinian statehood by the parliamentary wing of the Labor Party has made Yusra reassess.
Many say the idea that the interests of a diverse group can be boiled down to one issue is, frankly, a bit insulting. The ideological and generational divide started in the late 1980s and was at its height during the last federal election, the research found. "They can't keep operating on the basis that migrants are going to assimilate into their political world. It is evolve or die."
