From fossil fuels to green hydrogen, 21-year-old Gladstone local Kristy Smith is proud that the reputation of her home town is changing.
Home to one of the largest bulk commodity ports in the world, its coal-fired power station , alumina refinery , aluminium smelter , coal terminal and gas plant s line the city's fringes and deepwater harbour.But the region has entered a renewable energy era.
Since then, more than 15 renewable projects have progressed in the region, including the construction of a 480-megawatt solar farm in Aldoga and"It's really changing the morale of the town," said Kristy Smith, 21. "The more we protect it and the more we look after the environment and our future … the longer we get to enjoy it."Jacqueline McCosker also grew up in Gladstone and works as a climate and energy campaigner for the Australian Conservation Council."We can actually see solar panels now outside of Gladstone so I'm definitely excited of how that's going to protect local jobs," she said.
"I definitely think the younger generation are probably more excited about than some of the other older generations … like me — I'm a big fan of the coal industry," he said.But despite the multi-government career opportunities, Ms McCosker said attracting younger people to the area was an ongoing challenge.She said that was partly due to a lack of social and cultural activities including live music, and issues with accessing primary health care such as GPs and psychologists.
