A young man has died in police custody within hours of his arrest in a Queensland town south of Brisbane.

Riley O’Brien Faulkner, 21, was arrested on a return to prison warrant in Logan on Wednesday about 5pm and taken into custody at the Beenleigh Watchhouse.

Queensland Police’s Ethical Standards Command on behalf of the State Coroner are investigating the incident which is subject to oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission. The 21-year-old previously spent two and a half years in prison after he was convicted for running over Queensland Police officer Peter McAulay in 2018 near Ipswich when he was just 16.

He was left with life-changing challenges such as speaking difficulties, short-term memory loss and hearing loss however he returned to work two years later in 2020.
