NRL: An insane late elbow from Hudson Young on Kalyn Ponga has seen the first sin bin of the 2024 NRL season.
The Canberra Raiders beat the Newcastle Knights 28-12 on the back of a starring display from Hudson Young in their clash at McDonald Jones Stadium.
A moment of madness by Hudson Young threatened to relight the fiery rivalry between the two teams that spilled over during last year’s finals series. Canberra got the penalty and incredibly struck the very next set when new recruit Zac Hosking flew high to score off a Jamal Fogarty kick, with Hosking then setting up Young who redeemed himself with a try at the death.
Stuart’s soldiers failed to register a single line-break in the first half but they got through the basics unlike their opponents, with Canberra scoring three unanswered tries to run away with it. Knights winger Enari Tuala didn’t return after half-time and is unlikely to return next week, with Tom Jenkins in line to replace him, while the Raiders are sweating on Danny Levi’s fitness after he limped off moments after he scored a crucial try.
The Raiders begin life after Jack Wighton with teenager Ethan Strange looking to fill the void at five-eighth alongside Jamal Fogarty over recruit Kaeo Weekes.
