A 9-year-old Naperville boy who has been battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia for the last three years was surprised this week when his bedroom was transformed into one fit for a superhero.
At 9 years old, Yamil is already a superhero. And this week, the Naperville boy who has been battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia for the last three years received a dream bedroom fit for one. Thanks to Special Spaces, a nonprofit organization that creates one-of-a-kind bedrooms for children fighting cancer, Yamil’s room was transformed into Spiderman’s universe complete with a new loft bed and slide.
“Then we start planning,” Meador said. “Our minds start working to fit all of this fun stuff in for him. Our big surprise is the mural, and we work with an awesome muralist, the most talented person we’ve ever met.” For more than two months, the two women plan, shop and load up a van with all their supplies so the transformation can magically come together in one day. Together, they have done more than 80 room makeovers. “We want to make a child go, ‘Wow,’” Gallagher said. “That’s our job.
