According to the Northern Ireland Youth Forum, youth homelessness here has increased by 500% since the pandemic
A young Co Antrim woman has opened up about struggling with homelessness for years and how she is now helping others to escape the cycle of poverty and find permanent and stable places to live.
She said: "I would have lived in homeless accommodation with my parents when I was quite young because of their tumultuous relationship. Me and mummy would have lived with my granny here and there and maintained our own tenancies for a while. "With the support of the NIYF, I was able to further myself and I applied to be part of their executive committee and enrolled to do community youth work at university and I'm about to enter my third year."
"We’ve been there and know what works and what doesn’t. Being a participant with NIYF before I was a staff member, gave me the knowledge of how invaluable the work is. The NIYF is working with Ulster University on a National Lottery-funded project to give young people experiencing homelessness the opportunity to gain a Level 4 qualification and to work with university staff to remove barriers to higher education.
“The event is shining a light on the many challenges they face daily. We hope these young people’s stories are listened to and what they have to say is acted upon.”
